German data lift hopes

A bigger than expected jump in a barometer of the German business climate boosted hopes that Europe's biggest economy might claw its way out of stagnation in the second half. The Ifo index rose for the second month in succession to a headline reading of 88.8 for June, up from 87.6 in May. But fears over eurozone prospects were kept alive by the sharpest slump in French consumer spending for almost four years.
