EU: Exports from the Famagusta port

05/06/2003 15:18
EU negotiator, Leopold Maurer, has expressed the possibility that the Famagusta port will be used for a future export of T/C goods (agricultural) to the EU member states. This option will strengthen the confidence measures between the two sides, while the sanitary control will be carried out by the EU experts, Mr. Maurer stressed.

Government spokesman, Kypros Chysostomides said that the control of the T/C goods by the EU experts will be conducted on condition that the Republic of Cyprus will give its authorization. “The EU has no authority on the territories of the Republic. Therefore, any EU control must be authorized by the Republic first”, he noted.

It is obvious that the Cyprus government does not eliminate the possibility of an EU control on the T/C products.

It is also noted that the Chairman of the T/C Chamber of Commerce, Ali Erel, insists that the T/C goods must be exported by the Famagusta port.

Similarly, Denktash’s Deputy Minister, Ahmed Eker, has expressed the hope that the Cyprus problem is solved via an economic cooperation and development of the living standards for both sides.
