Inflation down by 0.9% in September

In September 2020, the Consumer Price Index increased by 0.85 units and reached 99.95 units compared to 99.10 units in August 2020. Compared to September 2019, the CPI decreased by 0.9%. According to data released on Monday by the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus, for the period January-September 2020, the CPI decreased by 0.6% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

As regards the economic origin, the largest changes when compared to the index of September 2019 were recorded in Electricity and Petroleum products with percentages of -25.9% and -10.1% respectively, while in comparison to the index of the previous month, the largest change was monitored in Agricultural goods with a percentage of 5.8%.

Compared to September 2019, the categories Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (8.2%) and Transport (4.1%) recorded the largest negative changes, whereas the category Food and non-Alcoholic Beverages had the largest positive change with a percentage of 2.3%.

In comparison to the CPI of the previous month, the largest positive change was noted in Clothing and Footwear (8%), while the largest negative change was recorded in Transport (1.2%).

For the period January–September 2020, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the largest change was recorded in Transport with a percentage of -4%.

Compared to the Index of September 2019, the categories Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (1.00) and Transport (0.61) had the largest negative effect on the change of the CPI, whereas the category Food and non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.43) had the largest positive effect.

The categories Clothing and Footwear (0.53) and Food and non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.47) had the largest positive effect on the change of the CPI compared to the previous month, whereas Transport  (0.17) had the largest negative effect.

Electricity (0.95) and Petroleum products (0.86) had the most notable effect on the change of the CPI of September 2020 compared to September 2019.

Finally, clothing (0,34) and fresh vegetables (0.31) had the largest positive effect on the change of the CPI of September 2020 compared to the previous month, whereas airfares had the largest negative effect of 0.19 units.
