Cyprus is among the most developed countries in infrastructure, administrative ability and application of the regional policy legislations, EU Commissioner Gunter Verheugen said on Thursday, within the framework of the presentation of the European Commission’s Announcement with regard to the commitments undertaken by the acceding countries.

Gunter Verheugen together with the EU Commissioner Michel Barnier said that the Announcement evaluates the progress of the ten acceding countries in the future administration of the Structural and the Cohesion Funds. The Announcement reports that several countries need to improve their infrastructure, so as to be able to absorb the resources from the regional Funds when they become full EU members.

Cyprus, Malta, the Czech Republic and Estonia have coped well with the infrastructure, while Slovakia and Latvia are still weak. Mr. Barnier announced that the Ministers of the ten acceding countries, who are responsible for the administration of the Structural Funds, will hold a meeting on October 6, 2003.

The two Commissioners have urged the ten countries to comply with the measures to avoid cash disbursement problems.
