Cyprus supports single digital market strategy

Cyprus supports efforts to promote the strategy for the single digital market, including the Directive in relation to online purchases, Minister of Justice and Public Order Ionas Nicolaou has said during the proceedings of the first day of the ministerial meeting of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

According to an official press release issued here today, Ministers exchanged views on ways to strengthen the confidence of European consumers and increase legal security both for the consumers and businesses when they are doing business across borders.

In his intervention, Nicolaou expressed Cyprus` support to the efforts being made to promote the Digital Single Market Strategy, including the above Directive and emphasized the need for maximum harmonization of legal regulations of the Member States in these areas.

Furthermore, EU Ministers discussed the proposed Directive for the exchange of information extracted from criminal record between member states and in particular to include fingerprints of third country nationals which is part of the package of prevention measures to tackle terrorism.

The Ministers agreed to create a central database which qualifies as the best choice both from an operational point of view and in terms of cost.

On the fingerprints I-registration issue, Nicolaou stressed that, for the proposal to have an added value, common criteria should be defined for the offences for which fingerprints will be recorded in order to include as many cases possible.
