European institutions in Cyprus highlight the need for increased voter turnout in the European Elections in Cyprus scheduled to be held on May 26 2019.

European elections were discussed in an event to brief journalists, organised by the Larnaca Municipality’s Europe Direct information centre.

“The biggest challenge is voter turnout, it is important to ensure that people who believe in the EU go to the polls,” said Alexandra Attalides, Spokesperson of the office of the European Parliament in Cyprus.

She recalled that voter turnout in the 2014 European Elections reached to 43.9%.

Babis Metaxas, head of press and media of the European Commission’s representation in Cyprus, also highlighted the need to persuade more people to go to the polls.

“Our joint goal is to increase voter turnout, which is very important, as this gives legitimacy to the institutions of the EU,” he said, noting that the European Parliament will lead a campaign for the 2019 elections.

Europe, Metaxas added, protects its people in a very difficult climate, considering unexpected events such the financial crisis and Brexit.

On her part, Mirto Katsouris, head of Larnaca Europe Direct, said raising awareness about the upcoming European Elections is among the centre’s action plan for 2019.

The 2019 elections will take place on May 26-29 in 27 member-states after the exit of the UK from the European Union in March 2019. Cyprus has six seats in the European Parliament.
