Chief Negotiator for Cyprus’ Accession to the EU Georgos Vassiliou, held a series of meetings in Brussels on the 11 and 12 February with EU officials, clarifying Cyprus’ position in relation to the remaining chapters under negotiation.

Referring to the Commission’s report on agricultural issues, Mr. Vassiliou highlighted Cyprus’ differences to other candidate countries and explained the reasons why Cyprus should be allowed to keep a zero factor for VAT on foodstuffs and medicines. Mr. Vassiliou also confirmed Cyprus’ commitment to completion of tax reforms, necessary for the country’s accession.

Mr. Vassiliou also visited Paris where met with French officials discussing matters pertaining to the chapters under negotiation, with the aim of closing the pending chapters during the Spanish presidency of the EU.
