GDP: Cyprus ranked amongst the first from candidate countries

According to data from the EU’s statistical service, four regions recorded per capita GDP of at least 75% of the EU average in 1999: Praha in the Czech Republic (124%), Bratislavskύ in Slovakia (95%), Cyprus (85%) and Kφzιp-Magyarorszαg in Hungary (75%). There were eight regions, including four in the Czech Republic, where the figure was between 50% and 75% of the EU average, and there were nine regions (five in Romania and four in Bulgaria) where the figure did not reach 25% of the average.
Among the six candidate countries with at least two NUTS-2 regions, the highest regional per capita GDP was more than double the lowest in Poland (2.1), Hungary (2.3), Slovakia (2.4) and the Czech Republic (2.6).
The candidate countries are Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey. There are 56 level-2 regions in these countries, equivalent to the NUTS-2 regions in the EU. Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia each comprise a single region, as do Malta and Turkey, for which no regional division has yet been made.
