Minister of Justice and Public Order George Savvides has said that the EU member states must act on the basis of solidarity in case of an hybrid threat.
The Minister, who was addressing the Informal Meeting of Justice and Home Affairs Ministers that took place 18 and 19 of July in Helsinki, Finland, said that Cyprus is particularly sensitive in this issue, due to the various threats it faces from Turkey. He pointed out that in an hybrid threat, the EU member states should act together in the spirit of solidarity.
Referring to another issue, he said that in order to strengthen operational cooperation, it is necessary to strengthen the exchange of information between the competent authorities of the EU Member States.
According to Finland`s EU Presidency, migration, the course of internal security and strengthening of common values and the rule of law were the key issues of the meeting. Other issues were the future of EU internal security and migration policy. They also addressed artificial intelligence and held a political debate based on a fictitious hybrid threat scenario with the aim of highlighting hybrid threats from the internal security angle.
The Justice Ministers discussed the future of justice, the strengthening of the rule of law and the topical challenges in the field of cooperation in criminal matters. The role of civil justice in multilateral cooperation was also discussed.
Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the Council, the Minister held a series of separate meetings i.e. with his EU counterparts, with EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Demetris Avramopoulos and the President of Eurojust, with whom he discussed issues of mutual interest.
