Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades briefed on Friday a delegation of the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union about Turkish violations of the international law against the Republic of Cyprus.

The President received the delegation which is in Cyprus for a conference of the Board of the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the EU, hosted by Cyprus’ Supreme Court.

In statements after the meeting, Cyprus’ Supreme Court President Myron Nicolatos said that President Anastasiades had the opportunity to inform the delegation about the violations of the international law by Turkey against the Republic of Cyprus, refer to the recent events related to Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as well as to the major issue of the occupation of part of Cyprus by Turkey.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Ankara has issued a navigational telex, announcing its intention to start drilling off Cyprus until September 3. The Turkish drill ship “Fatih” is located almost 40 nautical miles west of the Akamas peninsula and 83 nautical miles from the Turkish coast. The area falls within the EEZ and continental shelf of the Republic of Cyprus.

Referring to the conference hosted by the Supreme Court, Nicolatos said that it will address issues as the independence of the judicial power and the rule of law.

Responding to questions Nicolatos said that an exchange of view will take place among the Presidents of Supreme Courts from EU member states with different legal and justice systems and this will be beneficial for everyone.

Moreover, he noted that the Cypriot justice enjoys a very high degree of independence, is completely independent from the executive and the legislative power and there has never been an intervention in its independence.

The independence of the judicial power is the cornerstone of democracy, the rule of law and the respect of human rights, Nicolatos underlined.
