22/11/2002 17:22
“Cyprus’ strategic aim to join EU has almost been brought into completion. The incorporation, however, of the Cyprus economy in the EU can be achieved by the strengthening of competitiveness and social cohesion and solidarity”, said the Finance Minister, Takis Klerides, on the occasion of the visit of Greek Finance Minister, Nicos Christodoulakis, in Cyprus.

The Minister pointed out that the completion of Cyprus accession in the EU entails evident political and social-economic benefits for Cyprus that are to become even greater in case Cyprus partition problem is solved as well .

“Cyprus accession in the EU is to create a new setting in macroeconomic policy, as the country is ready to confront all challenges stemming from the accession and longs for joining the Euro zone as soon as possible (Cyprus meets the basic Maasticht requirements)”, the Minister noted.

Finally, Mr. Klerides said that the visit of Greek Finance Minister in Cyprus is “of great importance” amid current political developments and the imminent Copenhagen Summit that will come up with the final decisions over the EU enlargement, while Greece is to take the EU lead from January 1, 2003.
