The House Financial and Budgetary Affairs Committee approved on Monday the appointment of Yiannakis Lazarou and Yiannis Tsaggarides to the post of the Commissioner of Taxation and the Assistant Commissioner of Taxation, respectively.
Left wing AKEL, the main opposition party, and the Green Party disagreed over the appointment “on procedural grounds”, Chairman of the Committee Nicolas Papadopoulos said.
Finance Minister Harris Georgiades, who was present at today's meeting, informed the Committee that the Government will come back to Parliament for the appointment of two more Assistant Commissioners of Taxation.
As part of Cyprus' obligations arising from the bailout it agreed to in March 2013 with its international lenders, the Inland Revenue Department has merged with the VAT Service to form the Tax Department as from the 1st of July 2014.
