The government will offer help to the mountain communities which have been affected by the catastrophic fire that broke out last weekend in the districts of Larnaka and Limassol, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said.

The President was speaking on Tuesday at the Presidential Palace where he received the annual report of the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities, Kostas Champiaouris.

According to a press release, the President congratulated Champiaouris for his work, adding that apart from the national strategy for Troodos - which is  a pilot plan - he proceeded with the region of Pafos, especially the area of Polis-Tillyria and the plans for the mountain areas of Larnaka.

Of course, he added, the tragic events will not stop us, on the contrary, we will insist on making an comprehensive plan to address the problems, taking into account the disaster.

He assured that the government will help the communities which have been affected by the fires as well as all mountain areas. He said that the housing policy covers 386 communities, while there are ia plans for entrepreneurship in the mountain communities and a series of other actions.

"Our concern remains the development of mountain communities through national strategies, such as the national strategy for Troodos," he said.

Champiaouris said that the report includes in detail the actions and the key priorities set by his office. He recalled that the President of the Republic had given instructions to extend the national strategy to the districts of Pafos and Larnaka and that on July 2 the announcement for an open tender for these areas was made public.

All these, he said, will be put under the microscope so that there is a holistic approach for a sustainable development of both the affected area and mountainous region of Pafos.
