Cyprus` Attorney General George Savvides said that he convened on Tuesday a meeting during which the next steps were decided, following an Al Jazeera report on the Cyprus Investment Programme.

Noting that the Al Jazeera report has caused outrage, anger and concern among the citizens, the Attorney General says that he gave clear instructions from the beginning to the Police to conduct a full, thorough and in-depth investigation into the possibility of anyone committing criminal offences.

In a written statement, Savvides says that he convened a meeting today in his office, in the presence of the Assistant Attorney General, Law Office officials, the Assistant Chief of Operations and senior officials of the Police Crime Department, during which they decided on next steps.

Concluding, he  assures that he will do whatever is deemed necessary with the aim of safeguarding the public interest.

Meanwhile, left wing AKEL MP Christakis Giovanis gave his resignation from the House of Representatives and from the positions he holds at the AKEL political party.

In a letter he sent to General Secretary of AKEL and which he made public, Giovanis says that  "following the staged video with the "undercover journalists" of the Al Jazeera network, which aimed to damage the prestige of our country, but also  the investment program of the Republic of Cyprus, for reasons of political correctness I submit my resignation from the seat of the Member of Parliament for AKEL Famagusta in the Cypriot House of Representatives".

He also submits his resignation as a member of the AKEL Central Committee and from all party bodies, giving his party "the opportunity to proceed with determination in the full investigation and clarification of the case".
