10/11/2021 14:03

House President Annita Demetriou, in her capacity as ambassador of the Women Political Leaders’ Network, represented the House of Representatives at the fourth annual Reykjavík Global Forum – Women Leaders conference, pledging to keeping working for women`s equality. The conference was addressed by political leaders and officials from international organisations.

In a recorded message, Demetriou remarked on the significant progress Cyprus has achieved in modernising legislation to address gender-based violence, harassment, stalking and sexism. She also pointed out that despite the strong legislative framework in Cyprus for gender equality, the road to achieving substantive equality is a long one.

Despite the political commitment expressed to promote gender equality in Cyprus, said Demetriou, Cypriot women remain underrepresented in decision making centres and leadership positions due to established stereotypes and social prejudice.

She underlined the need to focus efforts on the challenges faced in bridging the salary and pension gap and tackling gender segregation in education, training and employment.

She pledged to work tirelessly to strengthen the role of women and to make progress in this direction.
