Interior Minister: Government addressing migration problems

10/12/2019 14:07

The government is taking measures to address the problems created by the influx of a huge wave of migrants and refugees, Minister of the Interior Nicos Nouris has said, noting that first measure concerns safety in the capital with Police and National Guard patrols, and the second has to do with reducing the time needed to take decisions on asylum.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event on Monday, Nouris said that Cyprus is witnessing an unprecedented influx of migrants and refugees.

The 24-hour patrols, he said, began on Monday in Nicosia on a trial basis, noting that the measure would be evaluated at the end of January 2020.

The second measure, he added, was in the pipeline, and all necessary meetings were already being held.

If the huge waves of migrants continue, Nouris said, then the social fabric would suffer pressure, along with the economy.
