President Anastasiades to take part in EUMED-9 Summit in Spain

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades departs on Thursday for Spain, upon the invitation of his Spanish counterpart, to take part in the Summit of the EU countries of the Mediterranean EUMED-9 that will take place on the 9th of December. 

A press release by the Presidency says that the Summit will be attended by the leaders of Spain, Greece, Cyprus, France, Italy, Portugal, Malta, Croatia and Slovenia. Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission will also attend part of the Summit.

Among the issues of discussion are the effects of the ongoing war in Ukraine, with a focus on energy, economic and social challenges that the EU and especially its southern members must face, as well as the role of the Mediterranean countries regarding the future of Europe.

They will also discuss security and stability in the region, how to avoid challenges in the Mediterranean basin, the Cyprus issue, migration,  protection of the environment and green development.

The President, who will return to Cyprus on the 10th of December, will be accompanied by Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos.
