The labour dispute in Vassiliko Cement Works will be forwarded to the mediatory service at the same time that the employees threaten to escalate their strikes.

Meanwhile, a labour crisis threatens the ready-made concrete sector as well.

In his statements to StockWatch, General Manager of SEK builders’ union, Yiannakis Ioannou said that the general meeting of SEK’s members decided that if the mediatory service fails to ease the dispute by tomorrow noon, the employees will protest outside the Vassiliko Cement Works Head Office in Nicosia.

Similarly, the General Manager of PEO union, Michalis Papanikolaou said; “Unfortunately, the company has a monopoly in ready-made concrete construction and, therefore, it violates arbitrarily the union contracts without informing the trade unions. If the mediatory efforts are not fruitful, the employees will escalate their measures”.

On the other hand, Vice Chairman of Ready-Made Concrete Construction Association, Sotiris Spiritos, in his statements to StockWatch, urged the trade unions to have second thoughts, because 2 thousand employees are currently out of job, while the contractors’ association is considering closing its work sites, with incalculable impacts on the economy.

On behalf of the mediatory service, Andy Apostolou recommended patience until tomorrow morning when it will become clear if there is room for both sides to come to the negotiation table.
