Vehicles with diesel engine decrease

According to CYSTAT data released on Friday, Japan remained the main supplier of motor vehicles in Cyprus, as Japanese cars accounted for 60% of total registrations (6 out of 10 Cypriots buy Japanese cars), while European Union member states hardly supplied 33% of the newly registered cars.

Car sales were once again at their best, since in 2002 the total number of motor vehicles registered increased by 6.1% to 40,000 cars (against 38,000 cars in 2001). Of these, 18,433 were new vehicles and 21,934 were used. Vehicles with diesel engine decreased by 11.6% to 10,393 in 2002 compared to 11,751 in 2001. It is worth mentioning that private saloon cars raised by 24.1% to 26,264 (21,164 in 2001), while from the total private saloon cars in 2002, 18,322 or 69.8% were used private saloon cars and 7,942 or 30.2% were new private saloon cars.

Meanwhile, goods conveyance vehicles decreased by 8.6% to 7,334 in 2002, compared to 8,023 in 2001, mostly attributable to the decrease on light goods vehicle and – luckily - not the heavy ones. Specifically, light goods vehicles decreased by 11.4% to 6,423 against 7,249 in 2001, while heavy goods vehicles increased by 17.7% to 911 against 774 in 2001.

Finally, mechanized cycles registrations decreased by 16.6% to 3,967 in 2002 against 4,756 in 2001.
