Petrol drags down credit card use

The use of credit cards in the domestic market seems to stabilize, according to new data from JCC, as lower petrol prices seem to affect the overall picture regarding the value of credit card transactions.

The value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in the domestic market fell slightly by 1% in September 2015 compared to last year and amounted to € €177.9 mn. The number of transactions stood at 2.9 mn recording a 5% increase.

In August, the use of credit cards by Cypriots in the domestic market was stable.

According to JCC, an increase occurred in the categories of supermarkets, health, restaurants and schools in September 2015, while, a decrease was recorded in government, petrol and entertainment services.

In the first nine months of 2015 the use of credit cards by Cypriots remained stable at € 1637 mn.

The use of credit cards by Cypriots abroad, including online shopping, reached € 107 mn in September 2015 recording an increase of 5%. In August there was a decrease of 2%. The number of transactions increased by 5% and reached 917.8 thousand in September.

In the nine months of 2015 the use of credit cards by Cypriots abroad rose by 2%, reaching € 876.1 mn.

As for the non-Cypriots, the value of credit card transactions rose by 5% in September reaching € 75.1 mn. In August the increase was 2%.

An increase of 6% was recorded in the number of transactions which amounted to 761.8 thousand.

In the period of January-September 2015 credit card transactions of non-Cypriots increased by 8% to €530.2 mn.
