22-month high for bounced cheques

The number of bounced cheques in the market hit a 22-month high in November, boosting estimates that there are still liquidity problems in the market despite the recovery signs.

According to latest Central Information Registry data, the number of bounced cheques in November stood at 422 against 398 in October 2010 and 361 in November 2009.

On an annual basis, their number surged 16.9%, while on a monthly basis the increase stood at 6%.

In the first eleven months of the year, their number dropped 2.4% to 3,999 from 4,099 in the corresponding period of 2009.

As for their value, it stood at €766.9 thousand in November against €924.9 thousand in October 2010 and €511.1 thousand in November 2009.

For the period January – November 2011, the value of bounced cheques amounted to €7.2 million from €8.7 million last year.
