14/10/2009 06:53
The negative performance of the tourist industry in Cyprus pushed the domestic beer and refreshment sales sharply down in the first nine months of the year. The lower tourist arrivals by 200 thousand, which are mostly attributable to the decline in the British market, seem to have affected negatively the domestic consumption of drinks.

According to latest CYSTAT data, domestic beer deliveries from breweries fell 10.4%, while domestic refreshments deliveries from factories declined 6.4%.

The beer deliveries for domestic consumption in January – September 2009 stood at 29.5 million against 32.9 million in the corresponding period of 2008.

In September 2009, the quantity disposed was 7,2% less than a year ago, dropping to 3.8 million litres compared to 4.1 million litres in September 2008. As for the exports, 417 thousand were exported in the first nine months of the year and 47.2 thousand in September.

With regard to the refreshments, their domestic deliveries in January – September fell to 46 million litres against 49.1 million litres in the corresponding period of 2008.

In September, the domestic refreshments consumption decreased 12.5% to 5.6 million from 6.4 million in the corresponding month of 2008, the highest since May. The refreshment production is destined for domestic consumption only.
