Bounced cheques up 46%

The liquidity problems that households and businesses face pushed the number of bounced cheques in the market sharply up in August.

According to latest Central Information Registry data, bounced cheques in August 2012 recorded an increase of 46.4% to 473 from 323 in the corresponding month of 2011.

In the first eight months of the year, bounced cheques surged 28% to 3204 from 2504 last year.

Their highest increase was recorded in January (52.9%).

As for their value, it increased to €693.9 thousand from €419.5 thousand in August 2011.

The value of bounced cheques for the period January – August 2012 stood at €5 million from €3.7 million last year (+36.4%).

In 2011, the number of bounced cheques reached 3840 and their value €6.4 million.
