Cigarettes at +23% despite ban

The smoking ban since early 2010 does seem to intimidate smokers, since according to Finance Ministry figures, the value of the imported cigarettes in Cyprus in the first months of 2010 recorded an increase of 23% compared to 2009.

In the first quarter of 2010, the sum spent for the import of tobacco goods for local consumption stands at €12.4 million compared to the corresponding period of 2009, when their value fell to €10.1 million.

For the full year 2009, the sum spent for the import of cigarettes stood at €64 million.

The figures were submitted to the Parliament by the Finance Ministry, after a letter sent to the Minister by Ecologist MP, Giorgos Perdikis.

In a responsive letter, Mr. Stavrakis stressed that the Statistics’ Service does not have figures on the retail sales of the tobacco goods.

“There is only one company producing cigarettes in Cyprus, therefore, the figures concerning the production of tobacco goods are confidential, pursuant to article 13 of the Statistics’ Law 2000 and cannot be published”, the Minister said.
