Consumption up in Aug

Domestic consumption increased in August, boosting forecasts for a recovery in the next few months.

This is what the new JCC Payments data show for the credit card transactions.

In August 2010, the Cypriots’ credit card transactions in the domestic market rose 4% to €160.1 million, while the number of transactions stood at 2.2 million (+6%).

In the first seven months of the year, the value of transactions by Cypriots in the domestic market rose 3% to €1251.4 million.

Most credit cards were used in super markets (20.31%), clothes (11.88%) and other retail trade goods (11.63%).

Overseas, credit card transactions by Cypriots in August soared 17% to €100 million, while their number surged 18% to 631.7 thousand. In the first eight months of the year, their value of transactions recorded an increase of 13% to €757.6 million.

The use of credit cards by non-Cypriots increased by 9% in August to €52.8 million.

The number of transactions rose 10% to 444.2 thousand, while in January – August, 2010, the value of transactions by non-Cypriots surged 5% to €284.6 million.

As for the use of credit cards by the T/C, their value stood at €1.5 million in August and €11.3 million in January – August 2010.

Credit cards by the T/C were used in super markets (€2.5 million), clothes (€2m), other retail trade goods (€2m) and house appliances (€1.8m).

Their value reached €1.1m in August and €7.1m in the first eight months of the year.
