Consumption remained stiff in June with the Cypriots spending less via credit cards in Cyprus but more overseas.
According to latest JCC Payments data, the value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in the domestic market fell 2% to €150 million. The number of transactions surged 2% to €2 million.
In the first half of 2009, the value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in Cyprus dropped 2% to €895.7 million, while the number of transactions declined 1% to 11.8 million. The credit cards were mostly used in super markets (20.37%), clothing (13.71%) and other retail trade goods (11.4%).
As for the credit card transactions by Cypriots abroad, they recorded an increase of 7% to €83.5 million. Their number soared 18% to 581.5 thousand.
In the first six months of the year, the value of transactions by Cypriots abroad rose 10% to €496 million, while their number increased by 19% to €3.5 million.
The value of transactions by non-Cypriots in Cyprus fell 11% to €45.8 million. In January – June 2009, it dropped 18% to €175.6 million.

As regards to the use of credit cards by the Turkish Cypriots, their value in June 2009 stood at €1.4 million, while their number did not exceed 23,899. In the first six months of the year, their value amounted to €8.1 million and their number to 138,499. The use of credit cards by the T/C is injected to clothes, house equipment, super markets and other retail trade goods.
The value of credit cards used by Cypriots in Turkey and the occupied north reached €846.8 thousand in June and €4.2 million January – June. The Cypriots used their credit cards for leisure purposes. Of the total €4.2 million, €2 million were for leisure and €848.8 thousand were spent to hotels.
