Credit card transactions accelerate

According to JCC Payments data released on Wednesday, the use of credit cards by Cypriots abroad in March 2006 recorded an increase of 26% to £17.7 million against £14.1 million in the corresponding month of 2005. In the first three months of 2006, Cypriots used their credit cards 27% more than the corresponding period of 2005 (12%).

In January-March 2006, credit card transactions by Cypriots abroad stood at £49.9 million against £39.2 million in the corresponding period of 2005.

Similarly, domestic credit card transactions by Cypriots showed an increase of 16% (against 10% last year) to £54.3 million compared to £47.0 million in March 2005.

In the first three months of 2006, the use of credit cards by Cypriots in Cyprus surged 15% to £162.1 million against £140.4 million in the corresponding period of 2005 (Jan-Mar 2005: +9%).

Use of credit cards by foreigners

On the other hand, domestic credit card transactions by foreigners in March dropped 1%, despite the increase of 10% in March 2005 compared to the corresponding month of 2004.

The use of credit cards by foreigners in Cyprus in the first three months of 2006 recorded the same increase as that of the first three months of 2005 (5%).
