Credit card transactions boom despite Mari

Credit card transactions recorded a significant increase in August despite concerns from the negative economic climate for the consumption sector after the Mari explosion.

According to new JCC data released on Thursday, the value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in the domestic market rose 9% to €181.2 million.

The number of transactions surged 10% to €2.5 million.

In January – August 2011, the value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in Cyprus increased by 10% to €1413.3 million.

Most cards are used in super markets, clothing stores and other retail goods as well as governmental services.

The use of credit cards by Cypriots abroad for the same month recorded an increase of 12% to €111.6 million.

In the first eight months of the year, the value of credit card transactions by Cypriots abroad rose 11% to €833.8 million.

As for the non-Cypriots, the value of their credit card transactions showed an increase of 9% in August to €57.5 million, which reflects the positive course in the sector of tourism.

In January – August 2011, the value of credit card transactions by foreigners in Cyprus soared 12% to €318.5 million.
