Credit card transactions dive in Jan

According to JCC Payments data released on Wednesday, domestic consumption slumped in January 2010. The use of credit cards in Cyprus recorded a sharp increase, reflecting the difficult economic conditions.

According to the figures, the value of domestic credit card transactions by Cypriots in January fell 13% to €161.1 million. The number of transactions stood at 2.1 million, recording a drop of 3%.

Most credit cards were used to supermarkets (26.67%), clothing stores (15.90%), other retail goods (12.68%) and fuel (11.28%).

As for the credit card transactions by Cypriots abroad, they recorded an increase of 13% to €92.3 million, while the number of transactions surged 27% to €691.1 thousand,

With regard to the credit card transactions by non-Cypriots in Cyprus, they were the same as last year and they stood at €18 million. The number of transactions rose 10% to 177.7 thousand.

The value of credit card transactions by the T/C reached €1.3 million and the number of transactions 22,689. Most credit cards were used to supermarkets, clothing stores, house appliances stores and other retail trade goods.

The value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in Turkey and the occupied north amounted to €625 thousand in January 2010. Of the total €625 thousand spent, €269.4 thousand were used for leisure activities and €146.1 thousand to hotels.
