Credit card transactions fall

According to latest JCC Payments data, the value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in May fell 4% to €142.8 million. The number of transactions dropped 2% to 1.95 million.

In the first five months of the year, the value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in the domestic market declined 2% to €745.7 million, while the number of transactions fell 1% to 9.8 million. Most credit cards were used in supermarkets and clothing stores.


As for the credit card transactions by Cypriots abroad in May, they recorded an increase of 6% to €86.5 million, while in the first five months of 2009 they surged 11% to €412.5 million.

Credit card transactions by non-Cypriots in Cyprus in May dropped 20% to €41.1 million, while in January – May 2009, they declined 20% as well to €129.8 million.

T/C credit cards

The value of credit cards used by the Turkish Cypriots in May stood at €1.5 million, while their number reached 25,178. In the first five months of 2009, their value reached €6.7 million and their number 114,600.

The value of credit cards used by Cypriots in Turkey and the occupied north stood at €730.4 thousand in May and at €3.4 million in January – May.
