Credit card usage down due to road tax

The use of credit cards in the domestic market recorded a decrease in January, according to new JCC data.

According to the figures, the value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in the domestic market fell by 6% to €205.8 million while the number of transactions increased by 1% to 3 million.

According to JCC, an increase was registered in supermarkets and clothing, footwear and accessories stores. Government services and petrol recorded a decrease.

The decrease in Government was affected by the Road Tax Department because of the different deadlines compared to last year.

JCC expects that in the next month there will be an increase in this category.

The overall monthly usage without the Government group increased by 2%

According to the figures, the use of credit cards by Cypriots abroad, including online shopping, remained stable at €96.6 million. The number of transactions also remained stable at 890.9 thousand.

As for the non-Cypriots, the value of transactions rose by 16% in the first month of 2015 to €30.8 million. The number of transactions soared 32% to 354.3 thousand.
