Crisis favours online purchases

According to an Evresis and ImarComms survey released recently, many consumers in 2011 used the internet and the online purchases against the crisis.

According to the results of the first quarter of 2011 of the subscription tool to measure and analyze the online purchases in Cyprus – the i-report - the online purchases reached the impressive 30.7% of the internet users, recording an increase of 8% compared to the recent i-report figures for 2010.

A significant number of the online buyers – almost 11% - spend €1000-€2000 per annum.

The highest percentage of 40.6% spent €100-€250 and aged between 13-44, while those of 13-17 were of 88%.

The group that made the most and most expensive online purchases was those of 35-44 years old, who bought ? of the total purchases of the period with 1 in 10 spending €1500-€2000.

Some internet users turned to the smart phones and gave a significant boost to purchases via phone.

The i-report registered that 7.5% of the total online purchases in the first quarter of 2011 was made from mobile phones, while the remaining 92.5% from the computer.

“The results of the first quarter of 2011 are an indication that the crisis forced the consumers to turn to online shops, taking advantage of the lower cost and the wider variety offered”, Evresis Manager, Nicholas Nicolaou said.

As for the categories and the type of goods that were bought online, clothes rank first with 37.8%, followed by air tickets with 26.3%.

With regard to the websites that were used, i-report registered Ebay as the first online shop with 39.1% followed by Asos with 24.4%, Amazon with 15.9% and Cyprus Airways with 8.8%.

“The i-report is the most effective and strategic tool of observing, measuring and analyzing the internet, a landmark for every strategic decision”, ImarComms Managing Director, Pericles Ellinas stated.

The size of the sample was 1042 persons who declared that they use the internet.

The survey was carried out on a nationwide basis, among men and women of 13 years old and over. The method used for the collection of data was the phone interviews via Evresis phone center between March 29 and April 7, 2011.
