18/08/2009 11:21
EAC’s generator station at Vassiliko is expected to host a movable desalination unit at first stage and a permanent one later, as soon as the Tenders’ Revisionary Authority issues its final decision the soonest possible.

According to newspaper “Phileleftheros”, if the representations to the Authority are fruitful, EAC will sign the contract for the start of the operations the soonest possible, irrespective of other legal problems that might arise.

If the legal problems are solved, the project will contribute to the permanent solution of the water problem in Cyprus in 2011, given that the works for the desalination unit in Episkopi will be finalized in summer 2011.

The desalination unit in Vassiliko will be constructed in cooperation with the Water Department and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. EAC has undertaken the construction of the unit and the Water Department the purchase of desalinated water.

The movable unit will be of 20,000 cubic meters and will operate until the construction of the permanent unit, which will be of 50,000 cubic meters per day.

With the signing of the contract, the movable unit will operate within 35 weeks and for 69 weeks. Recently, another contract has been signed for the construction of a desalination unit in Episkopi of 40,000 cubic meters per day with the provision to offer 20,000 cubic meters more per day.
