Increased water prices in 2011

The price of water supply and irrigation will go up again, affecting a series of other products. In his statements to StockWatch, Manager of Water Development Department, Sophocles Aletraris said that the technocratic study has already been prepared and shows the real cost of water for the government.

“The study, which has been prepared based on an EU directive, shows how much does the supply, irrigation and the recycled water cost to the government and which tariff policy will be followed”, he said.

He also clarified that according to the study, the regaining of the cost for the water supply must be 100%, while that of irrigation will be lower due to the climate changes and the geographical criteria of the country.

One of the scenarios is a uniform sale price to all towns.

In view of the new tariff policy prepared by the government, it has already scheduled public deliberations to all municipalities. The first will be held in Nicosia on March 22, the second in Larnaca, Limassol and Famagusta on March 23 and the third in Paphos on March 24. The public deliberations will be attended by the water supply councils, the consumers’ associations, the agricultural organizations, PASYXE, ETEK, the Environment Commissioner and all those who have a ‘say’ in the price increases.

The Agriculture Ministry must have the proposal ready by the end of the year so that it is approved by the Council of Ministers.
