Inflation down by 1.2% in April

In April 2020, the Consumer Price Index decreased by 1.52 units and reached 99.82 units compared to 101.34 units in March 2020. Compared to April 2019, the CPI decreased by 1.2%, the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus announced.

For the period January-April 2020, the CPI increased by 0.5% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

As regards the economic origin, the largest change when compared both to the index of April 2019 and to the index of the previous month was recorded in Petroleum Products with percentages of -15.1% and -11.6% respectively.
 
Compared to April 2019, the category Transport recorded the largest change with percentage of -7.5%.
 
In comparison to the CPI of the previous month, the largest changes were noted in Transport and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels with percentages of -4.6% and -4.3% respectively.
 
For the period January–April 2020, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the largest change was recorded in Communication (3.7%).
 
Compared both to the Index of April 2019 and to the index of the previous month, the category Transport had the largest effect on the change of the CPI with -1.12 and -0.67 units respectively.
 
Finally, petroleum products had the most notable effect on the change of the CPI of April 2020 compared both to April 2019 and to the previous month with -0.88 and -0.99 units respectively.
