Retail trade surges

According to CYSTAT data released recently, the retail trade volume index in August 2006 recorded an increase of 8% to 130.5 points against 120.8 points in the corresponding month of 2005. In January-August 2006, the index surged 6.4%. According to preliminary forecasts, the retail trade volume index in September showed an increase of 8.2% to 130.7 points compared to 120.8 points in September 2005. In January-September 2006, it recorded an increase of 6.6%.

Executive Secretary of Supermarkets Association, Andreas Hadjiadamou told StockWatch that the retail trade is booming lately. “This will continue in the next few months in view of the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays”, he added.

“The new opening hours will boost retail trade due to the increase in the business activities, employment and productivity will increase”, he concluded.
