Sharp increase in credit card transactions

The use of credit cards recorded a sharp increase this year since more and more households and businesses choose to make their transactions with “plastic money”.

According to new JCC data, despite the general downturn in consumption, the use of credit cards continue to record a significant increase.

The value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in the domestic market soared 15% to €186 million in October.

According to representative of Demetris Papafilippou, this increase is attributable to the increased payments via the JCCSmart service of JCC.

The number of transactions rose 11% to 2.5 million.

In January – October 2011, the value of transactions by Cypriots in the domestic market rose 11% to €1774.3 million.

Cards are mostly used in super markets (20%), other retail goods (11.23%), clothes (11.05%) and governmental services (10.02%).

The use of credit cards by Cypriots abroad in October surged 5% to €113.1 million due to the internet purchases.

The number of transactions increased by 7% to 881.7 thousand.

In the first ten months of the year, the value of transactions by Cypriots abroad rose 10% to €1062.1 million.

As for the non-Cypriots, the value of their credit card transactions in October inched up 2% to €51.4 million.

For January – October 2011, the value rose 10% to €421 million.
