2,500 objections for local plans

02/12/2003 15:31
The total objections submitted to the Interior Ministry against the four Local Plans approved by the Council of Ministers on March 21, 2003 amount to more than two thousand, Interior Ministry officials told StockWatch on Tuesday. So far, 2,114 objections have been already sent to the Urban Planning, while 400 to 500 are yet to be sent. The deadline for the submission of the objections was the 21st of Nov., eight months after the original approval of the revised Local Plans.

The objections will be referred to the Examination Committee, which is composed of the Mayor, the Chairman of the Community Council and the sub-prefect and is coordinated by the Manager of the Urban Planning Department. The proposals of the Committee will be referred to the powerful Urban Planning Council and will be examined within the period of ten months. The Council of Ministers will then review the decisions of the Council and will take the final political decision.

“The vast majority of the objections in Nicosia concern the provision for plots”, an official told StockWatch. This provides for the increase in the minimum piece of land for building purposes from 4,000 sq.m to 6,000 sq.m. A further controversial provision concerns the green areas, the ratios of which dropped sharply from 10-20% to 5%.

The previous revision of the local plans was carried out in 1996 and was finalized in 1999. Then, 753 objections had been submitted against the four plans of Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. “With the exception of the provision for plots, objections possibly stand at the same levels”, the official said, stressing that these are certainly fewer than those submitted in 1990.
