Building permits increase by an annual 46.7%

Building permits issued in Cyprus jumped by an annual 46,7% in the period of January – April 2021, reflecting the increased economic activity in the construction sector as Covid containment measures are easing.

According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), building permits authorized by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices issued in the period of January – April 2021 reached 2,524 compared with 1,721 in the respective period of last year which included a two-month lockdown in a bid to contain the spread of the Covid pandemic.
 
The total value of permits issued in January – April 2021 increased by 3.2%to €760 million, while the the total area by 36,0%. The number of dwelling units recorded an increase of 49,8% compared with the same period of last year.
 
Total building permits issued in April 2021 rose by 221% and amounted to 627 compared with 195 in April 2020, while compared with the previous March 2021 declined by 16%.
 
According to Cystat, the total value of the permits issued in April reached €230.6 million and the total area 192,9 thousand square meters. These building permits provide for the construction of 955 dwelling units, Cystat added.
 
In the Nicosia district total value of issued building permits in January – April 2021 rose by 26.6% with total area rose by 38% year on year. Building permits rose by 47.8% while dwellings units recorded n an increase of 32.4%.
 
In Larnaca total value of building permits issued in January – April 2021 rose by 40.6% and the total area increased by 29.6% year on year. Dwellings units spiked by 102% while the numbers of building dwellings rose by 76.9%.
 
According to Cystat, Limassol saw an annual increase of 39.5% in value of building permits and 35.1% with regard to total area. The number of dwelling units rose by 54% while building permits rose by 48.2%.
 
 
In the district of Pafos, the total value of the building permits issued in January – April 2021 rose by 66.4% year on year and total area by 75.5%. The number of dwelling units rose by 24.6%, while building permits increased by 78.1%, Cystat added.
 
Building activity in the Famagusta district decelerated in January – April 2021, with total value of building permits declining by 18.8% year on year and total area by 14.6%. The number of dwelling units declined by 30.7% while the number of building permits dropped by 7.3%.
