Building permits record sharp drop in April

Building permits issued in Cyprus recorded a sharp drop this April on an annual basis. Permits issued in the first four months of this year also decreased compared with the same period of last year, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service.

In particular according to CyStat, in April 2020, the second month during which COVID-19 containment measures continued to apply in Cyprus, the number of building permits authorized by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices stood at 195, recording a decrease of 62.5% compared to April 2019.

The total value of these permits reached €81,1 million and the total area 62,3 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 339 housing units.

During the period January – April 2020, 1,721 building permits were issued compared to 2,111 in the corresponding period of the previous year. The total value of these permits decreased by 53.0% and the total area by 26.5%. Τhe number of housing units recorded a drop of 9.8%.
