Building permits surge in 2003

According to CYSTAT data released on Tuesday, Cypriots have showed an increased interest on the construction of new buildings in 2003.

Specifically, the total number of permits approved by the municipalities has showed an increase of 18% to 692 for December 2003 compared to 586 in November 2003. The volume of constructions increased by 14% to 785 thousand cubic meters compared to 689 thousand cubic meters in November 2003.

The value of approved projects for December recorded an increase of 11% or £9 million to £89.7 million against November 2003, while the issue of these permits provide for the construction of 1,087 new house units, which is 2% higher than the volume of projects for November (877).

For 2003, the number of permits approved by the municipalities increased by 10% to 7,584 compared to 2002, while the volume of projects showed an increase of 14% to 8.8 million cubic meters against 2002 (7.7 million cubic meters).

Similarly, the value of projects recorded an increase of 17% to £1.03 billion for 2003 against £879.7 million in 2002. The total number of house units stood at 11,955 in 2003 compared to 8,127 in 2002 (+47%).

The latest figures on building permits are basically an index showing the future prospects of the island’s construction sector and economy.
