DISY Vice President, Averof Neophytou stated that the figures for the unemployment in June 2011 and its upward trend seem to confirm the FINMIN technocrats’ nightmare scenarios for unemployment of 8% in 2011.

In an announcement released today for the unemployment in June 2011, Mr. Neophytou said that according to the figures, the number of the registered unemployed in late June 2011 reached 27,102 persons, recording an increase of 20.7% compared to June 2010, when the unemployed were 22.460.

According to Mr. Neophytou, “the sharp increase in the percentage of unemployment is obvious if we compare with June 2008. In a period of three years, the increase has reached 158% in relation to the real data and 150% compared with the seasonal corrected data”.

“The figures on the age and the educational level of the unemployment must raise concerns”, he added.

“11% of the registered unemployed in June 2011 is under 25, 30% is under 30 and 27% are of higher education”, he said.

Mr. Neophytou also said that the growth rate of inflation is alarming. “Acording to Cystat data announced yesterday, inflation in Cyprus grew by 4.2% in June 2010 compared to 2.7% in the rest euro area”, he said.

“The price increase in the country during periods of crisis is alarming. Expensiveness reduces the consumers’ power and makes consumers vulnerable and helpless to the everyday needs”, he concluded.
