The transfer of natural gas to Cyprus has entered the final stages after today’s briefing of Mr. Christofias by Commerce Minister, Antonis Paschalides on DEFA’s decision to end up with a specific supplier for the next twenty years.

In his statements, Mr. Paschalides announced today that he has already informed President Christofias on the decision of the negotiating team to end up with a specific proposal, which will be submitted before the Council of Ministers soon. Tomorrow, he will have separate meetings with the parliamentary parties.

“I have informed the President on the course of the negotiations for the transfer of natural gas in the presence of the negotiating team of DEFA and the Regulatory Authority. The team has ended up with a specific proposal, which will be presented to the Council of Ministers soon”, he said.

According to the Minister, this project is of national importance and concerns all citizens. “It is also important for the economic growth, therefore, any postponement is not to the benefit of the economy”, he noted.

According to sources, DEFA has selected Shell for the natural gas supply against €6 million, while EAC’s decision for the offer of construction and management of the terminal in Vassiliko is still pending.
