DISY and EDEK criticized the government once again for the high prices.

DISY MP, Lefteris Christoforou said that Cyprus’s first place in expensiveness across Europe is unprecedented, while EDEK MP, Giorgos Varnava supported that Cyprus is a champion in expensiveness.

Mr. Christoforou said that Eurostat’s data cause distress and confirm that expensiveness in Cyprus rules and the government failed to stop it.

Mr. Christoforou also said that we cannot rank first in high prices among the EU member states, especially in relation to basic nutrition products that have to do with the survival of the Cypriot households and the high prices offered by the state services for goods such as water, electricity, telephony etc.

Similarly, EDEK MP, Giorgos Varnavas said that nobody can deny the numbers, when last September the increase in the price of food and non-alcoholic drinks reached 7%.

“Besides, the problem will become more intense in January, when the government will impose 5% VAT on food. We see indifference on behalf of the government. They declare that they have secured an EU permit for the submission of the bill on the imposition of ceiling on food, but we have not seen such bill”, he concluded.
