Road map for casinos

The management of the Cyprus Tourism Organization is preparing a road map for the opening of casino/s in Cyprus in view of the government’s final decisions on the issue.

On the basis of the study prepared by external consultants of the Organization and the government’s change of intentions, the CTO tries to specify the next steps.

CTO Chairman, Alecos Orountiotis stated that the Organization prepares a road map to determine the model that will be selected, the procedures that will be followed, the invitation of tenders as well as the impacts, either positive or negative, that will possibly emerge.

The study prepared by the CTO a long ago gives special emphasis on two different casino models, the exclusive purpose casino and the casino resort destination.

“The model that the CTO prefers is the one that will enrich the island’s tourist product, that is, the second model”, he told StockWatch.

“The casinos attract a special category of customers. We would like to see a casino in the hotel form, embellished with luxury rooms, music, dance and other performance rooms, high quality restaurants as well as SPA and swimming pools”, he said.

The Chairman also stressed that a casino which will offer gambling services only would not be ideal for Cyprus.

Mr. Orountiotis agrees that the opening of casinos will create new job posts and will increase the state revenues. As for their number and place, he said that this is clearly a political decision.
