The Deputy Ministry of Shipping expects to bring shipping closer to young people and to society in general, by establishing the Committee for the development of maritime culture and the promotion of maritime studies in Cyprus and a 16-member group of young shipping workers, who will act as guides.

The initiative, which uses the acronym D.I.S.C.O (Dive Into Shipping Career Opportunities) and with the slogan "Let's Disco", was presented on Monday by the Deputy Minister of Shipping, Vassilios Demetriades, in the presence of the campaign's partners, the Cyprus Shipowners' Union, the Cyprus Chamber of Shipping and the Cyprus Institute for the Sea and Shipping, as well as representatives of Wista Cyprus (Women of Cyprus Shipping) and Youngship Cyprus (Youth of Cyprus Shipping).

The purpose of the Committee, as pointed out, is to coordinate the actions of all the bodies that make up the maritime community of Cyprus with the aim of developing a maritime culture and promoting maritime studies and professions.

In addition, the committee aims to jointly formulate proposals and recommendations to the Academic Institutions and Maritime Academies, so that the study programs offered or any new ones that will be formed, fully respond to the modern challenges and needs faced by shipping nationally and at global level.

"We have created a steering group of 16 shipping executives, young executives active in the field, from different academic backgrounds, to highlight the multidimensional character of shipping," Dimitriades said.

The contact details of the 16 new shipping workers will be available on the website of the Deputy Ministry, while as part of the campaign visits will be made to secondary schools.
