The Consumer Price Index for June 2002 increased by 0,38 units or 0,43% to 110,88 units compared to 110,40 in May 2002. According to the Statistical Service, this is mainly due to increases in the prices of tobacco prices, electricity and fresh vegetables. Decreases have been recorded in the prices of certain fresh fruit and potatoes.
For the period January-June 2002 the CPI recorded an increase of 2,47% compared to the corresponding period of 2001. The rate of increase of the Index for June 2002 compared to June 2001 was 2,03%.
As from 1 June 2002, the price of tobacco increased by as much as 20 cents due to consumption taxes. The increase became evident in the 'Alcoholic Drinks and Tobacco Index' which increased from 126,69 to 147,66.
