05/10/2002 05:35
According to Statistical Service's data published on Friday, the inflation during the first nine months of 2002 reached 2.8% compared to the same period of 2001. Specifically, the Consumer Price Index for September 2002 increased by 1.24 points or 1.12% and reached 112.41 points compared to the 111.17 points of August 2002.

Technocrats of the Statistical Service estimate that this increase is due to price increases in clothes, shoes and textile goods due to the end of the sales period, as well as due to increases in fresh fruits and private school fees. On the other hand, there has been a reduction in the price in several fresh vegetables.

According to the announcement, the Index between January and September 2002 increased by 2.81% compared to the same period of 2001, while its growth rate during September 2002 was 3.41% compared to September 2001.

However, it is not possible to draw safe conclusions for structural inflation, that is, the general increase in prices not including indirect taxes. The index of alcoholic drinks and tobacco during the nine-month period increased by 10% although its has a small influence on the general index.

Two weeks ago, the Central Bank decided to let interest rates unchanged, expressing in this way its concern about inflation. According to Central Bank's estimates, in 2003 inflation will exceed 4%.
