European Commissioner Gunter Verheugen backed by Commission President Romano Prodi has proposed a donors’ conference for the financial support of Cyprus settlement.

The European Commissioner believes that the European Commission is ready to proceed to the organization of an international donor conference that is to offer financial support within the framework of a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

“Amid the crucial UN negotiations aiming to reach a settlement in Cyprus, the international community should express solidarity. It should be ready to support the cost and the reconciliation of the two communities”, Mr. Verheugen said.

As the CNA reports, Mr. Verheugen also stressed that the EU was ready to provide a financial support in case of a solution to help the island overcome economic disparities and to prepare Turkish Cypriot areas for EU membership.
