Chairman of the Council of Experts, Alexis Galanos, emphasized on Tuesday the need for a new Social Contract with the productive classes, while he was particularly revealing as regards to the proposals on the Cyprus economy submitted to President Papadopoulos on Friday.

Responding on the question whether the Council of Experts has proposed the liberalization of the semi-governmental organizations, Mr. Galanos replied that “there are no taboos” and emphasized the need for increased competitiveness and other competition regulations.

Mr. Galanos also stressed the need for a new agreement – a new Social Contract – with the productive classes (trade unions and farming organizations) and recommended that “talks should start from the scratch”.

The Chairman said that the proposals of the Council were submitted to President Papadopoulos on Friday early afternoon before his departure to the United States, however, Mr. Papadopoulos has submitted to the Council his own proposals for “further study”.

Mr. Galaonos also reiterated that the Council recommends the increase of state revenues and the decline in state expenditure and rejects the imposition of new taxes.

The statements were broadcasted by a private TV channel.
